Chapter Projects

The local chapter strives to fulfill the goals of the National Society at the community level.  Thus our activities focus on enhancing education for citizenship, preserving Oconee and Georgia heritage, and promoting patriotism.  Many of our activities are extensions of national and state initiatives, while others are derived from a recognition of local needs.  We work with the Oconee County public schools as well as private schools that have campuses within Oconee County.  Secondarily, we support state projects, both through service and monetary contributions.

Most activities are coordinated through committee work.  Examples of current and past projects include:

Flag of the United States: activities include presentation of awards to Oconee businesses who fly the American flag at their business site, cooperative activities with Boy Scout Troop 149 to host flag retirement ceremonies, and  placement of flags on veterans’ gravesites.

Constitution Week: activities include Constitution Week proclamation by County Commission, library display.

DAR Good Citizens Awards: activities include presentation of awards to distinguished seniors at Oconee County high schools for outstanding citizenship activities.

Veterans’ Service: activities include preparation of over 40 “care” packages to active duty military as well as coordination of a Veterans Day program at Colham Ferry Elementary School, coffee supplies to the V. A. Clinic in Athens, and notes to active duty troops.
